Proposed by the After-meeting Ad hoc Committee
An ad hoc committee consisting of members of the SMR community have been meeting to discuss issues raised regarding the after-meeting fellowship time that takes place on the SMR zoom channel following the daily meeting. Please see Motion 26-5 on the acamorning.org website for the committee’s full final report.
Issue:
The ad hoc committee proposes that a training be developed for hosts of the SMR after-meeting to ensure hosts have the knowledge and ZOOM skills necessary to provide a nurturing space for recovery. The committee strongly recommends that this training provide guidance on how to handle situations involving bullies or highly dysregulated attendees in order to maintain the safety of the room.
This host training is strongly recommended. However, a person who is already experienced and skilled at hosting a room does NOT have to take this training to be able to continue to host the after-meeting fellowship space.
Background:
Historically, there has been no formal training for those who moderate the after-meeting fellowship time. These hosts are often, but not always, those who have gone through other SMR training such as room host training. The committee recognizes that this training would be beneficial to ensure that all who volunteer to host the after-meeting have the skills need to be successful.

I love what others have said. Please do what is necessary to insure the room hosts feel safe and have the tools to provide that for themselves and others.
I think training would be a beneficial/ positive aspect to the after meeting.
I like this proposal. Given the nature of what brings us together, and the potential for disregulation and challenging situations to arise, training is a good thing, and ought to be required for all. The room host training I participated in was gentle and clear and I anticipate this training, whether folded into room host training or separate, will be helpful and gently delivered.
I think this is a great proposal.
I believe that when no Newcomer Greeter is scheduled, it also helps to be a little more specific when inviting someone to serve. For example, asking someone who regularly attends our after-meeting, is familiar with the process, and has the Newcomer Greeter script available can help ensure the service runs smoothly.
I like the current qualities of the after meeting of being spontaneous fluid adaptable and informal. As long as those characteristics of it remain and we don’t get too picky about what’s right or wrong I’d be in favor of helping more people feel comfortable about taking on the host role and having a bigger pool of willing workers sharing the service.
I hope the nature of the after meeting Space remains informal fluid, spontaneous and adaptable. Those are features of it that make it very appealing to me.
I like it! Thank you.
Maybe the after meeting can be structured similarly to the breakout rooms and training could be folded into the room host trainings. There’s also the question of who is to do the training. The room host trainings are done by volunteers at random, there is no structure in place other than the generosity of a few long term members.
training would be great, increase safety and consistency
limmit host of after from responding unless raised hand like all. limmit host of after from over sharing. 5 min for all with unlimmited shares and if host is directly asked a question, 5 mins as all cap. host of after should have a co- host, as often folks are left hanging not getting in.
the after-meeting seems to have transfomed from an informal voluntary “parking lot” social period to more of a forum for extended conversations about ACA topics with a 15 minute initial period dedicated specifically to newcomer questions. As a more formal extension of the morning meeting it seems some training would be helpful, for the hosts at the very least, giving them guidelines and “permission” to handle more difficult situations without fear or doubt. The hosts deserve our gratitude and leeway in tough spots. I’m in favor!
I agree with this proposal with one exception. Training should be required for all host. I see no reason to grandfather-in those who have hosted prior to the training being developed.
I am in agreement with this proposal.
This makes sense
