Proposed by Maelle and Jim R
Issue:
We move that the SMR Business Meeting be held on the 15th of each month, after the regular meeting in the main room.
Background:
When the “Strengthening My Recovery”-Mtg. began conducting its group business, we held the Business Meetings on Mondays. At that time, with most of the world being in Covid lock down, that was acceptable since almost everyone was staying home.
With people starting to return to regular work and school times, members noted they could no longer attend. Thinking that a weekend day might provide greater attendance, the Business Meeting was moved to Sundays. However, attendance was not noticeably improved.
By fixing the SMR Business Meeting to a set day of the month group business will be conducted on different days of the week throughout the year.
Here is a sampling of Business Meeting days, if the practice were in place today:
Wednesday, Oct. 15th
Saturday, Nov. 15th
Monday, Dec. 15th
Sunday, Jan. 15th
With this type of schedule more members might have the opportunity to attend.
Comments will be open until October 17th

I like this idea because when the meeting is always on a certain day of the week people might has a recurring conflict but this way the day of the week will vary.

As someone who works on Sundays, I fully support this change. I’ve heard the Business Meetings are attended by a small fraction of the hundreds of people who attend. This change could increase the percentage of people who can/will attend business meetings, I fully support it.
Great idea. Thank you.
If the business meeting was held on the 15th of the month, I would rarely be able to attend. I work Monday through Friday.
There is another online meeting that I used to attend. That is also a daily meeting, that group had their business meeting during the second half of the meeting itself. The recovery meeting was truncated being only 1/2 hour instead of one hour.
At the very least, the business meeting should be held in the main room, not a breakout room being held in the breakout room relates it to being unimportant.
I am not for this proposal.
Genius
Current pattern is good.
It’s easier to remember 3rd Sunday of week than 15th
Maybe we could do the business meeting in place of the regular meeting. This would allow for more people to attend. .
The same date and time of the month makes sense.
We could update the announcement (website, etc), host reading to include this and, as part of the reading every day.
For example:
group conscience voted to have our business meeting once a month on the 15th. Our business meeting is in place of our 7:30am meeting.
We have done this in order to allow more members to participate with decisions / practices, needs of the group, and to allow adherence to Tradition 2.
There will be no regularly scheduled SMR meeting on the 15th of the month. All are welcome.
Give it a couple months to begin, so people are aware and can plan accordingly.
Push back might be, “we can’t not have a meeting,”. I would ask: what is the purpose of the group? Do we want more members involved in helping mold the group, or just a few? Are we following Tradition? How will having more members involved serve the group, ACA as a whole, and how will it help our own healing?
As group we offer daily meetings. People would know in advance, Members would not have to take more time out of their day or miss events, work, etc.
Food for thought.
Does this proposal mean that the after-meeting would be cancelled on those dates, as it is stated, “after the regular meeting in the main room”?
Does the main room mean the same meeting room used for all meetings vs. a breakout room specifically designated for a business meeting?
I read the motions bottom-up and just saw the answer to my question in 25-8.
Apologies.
Basically, on the day of the business meeting, any other programming would take place in a breakout room.
Is there a problem with the business meeting being on Sundays? I have concerns about conducting business on (what is for most people) a workday. If Sunday is a concern because of church, it could be on Saturdays.
the idea of choosing a fixed date each month instead of a fixed weekday came up with participants sharing they could never come on a sunday (before a monday). the thought was that with fixing a date, the day of the week would change in the course of a year … by that it would not always be the same group of people being able to attend / not being able to attend. – the 15th was randomly chosen, but considering the existing scheduled service mtgs each 7th and 24th of a month.
I like this suggestion.
