Issue:
i would like to make a motion that we include both in the opening of meeting and opening of break out rooms that ‘we strongly discourage sharing while driving a vehicle’ or words to that effect
Background:
At today’s meeting I was a room host and someone was sharing while driving. I did not know this until their audio became so intermittent and unclear that I had to unmute myself and tell the person that we were having trouble hearing her and that she was going in and out. I suggested that if she was moving that maybe she could find a spot where we could hear her and stay there – I still did not know she was driving, could have been walking outside or around indoors. That was when she said she was driving and then suddenly stopped which was triggering for me, the room host, who had intervened.
1) sharing on zoom while driving is dangerous to the person sharing and others on the road
2) in addition, the room host and/or chairman and/or other members in the meeting can be put in a triggering position of managing another person’s dangerous behavior

The meeting occurs when many participants may be driving (rush hour/morning commute). I also have leaned to use the captions function under the icon labeled More if someone becomes inaudible for whatever reason or speaks iwth an accent that I might not be able to understand. I also wear hearing aids so captions help. This option is available to all participants. Often the captions catch the words so that I don’t interrupt a share when hosting. I try to avoid that as much as possible Maybe something like “follow your local laws regarding driving that may be distracting and that could cause an accident” or suggest pulling over though that might not be as feasible.. Having grown up with drunk driving and its dangers, my preference is to be at home when on a phone or internet meeting and there are usually meetings I can find to fit my schedule somewhat if not perfectly. However, my history of that kind of driving may have made me less aware of this concern and took others inattentive driving for granted (not my own). Also not a fan of people walking aournd in public when sharing on a phone or internet meeting, but that is their choice and I have choices as well. Best to all.
People talk on phones (hands free) frequently. We often lose contact with those sharing for various reasons. Think camera off while driving is good (would qualify has doing something distracting to others). Would encourage those volunteering to room host to reflect on whether that service is appropriate for them at this time.
Yes, please mention this for our meeting. This is the line from our script that can easily change:
“Please turn off your video when moving around , “driving” and doing tasks besides listening.”
It would be simple enough to add the one word driving to the sentence from out script.
Also, I feel very strongly about driving and automatically feel scared, worried & do not listen to any additional sharing from that driver who shares with camera on. It is so distracting to me. And may cause trauma triggers for anyone who had previous accidents, caused accidents, pedestrians are hit so often daily, in the city I live in. I appreciate a change of some sort!!
I feel very unsafe when I see someone driving while sharing. If something happens to them due to being distracted, I do not want to witness it. It would be great to discourage driving and sharing with camera on. Please add some verbiage discouraging it.

I wonder if there is any legal liability to ACA for not discouraging this form of distracted driving for accidents that may result from it. There is liability for bars in AZ that have allowed folks to over-drink and then get in accidents on the way home… and messing with a phone while driving has been shown to be as detrimental to driving attention as drinking. Enough so that some states have laws against it. Regardless the legal issue, I really don’t want to watch someone sharing while driving suddenly disconnect and then I have to wonder if they just went through a tunnel or worse. I’m strongly against it. I say pull over to share or just listen. Thanks
I think that sharing while driving is fine (although probably better to pull over) but no camera would be greatly preferred.
I would like to see brief language included to discourage what I think is clearly a hazardous behavior. Not just to the driver, who is welcome to risk whatever safety they like, but to many others on the road who may become victims of it. A brief sentence would only add a few seconds and quite possibly save many lives. Secondarily, and frankly, I’m not really interested in listening to anyone who’s only partly paying attention to what they’re saying while they’re weaving in and out of traffic. My time for meetings is limited, these are important and I don’t like being subjected to someone’s distracted focus. I find it irritating. The only exception I can think of is when an after-meeting host is on their way somewhere and is simply keeping their link active to keep the meeting open. I say listen only or park it.
I dont agree that people driving should not share, but I do think we should add turning camera off while driving to the script.
Current:
To minimize distractions, please turn off your video when moving around or doing other activities while listening…

Host and room host should be encouraged to turn videos off if people are driving because they are moving around and it is distracting.
I do not support this motion.
1) we are adults who can assess and act on risk.
2) we all have the option of looking away from the screen.
While I agree that situation like this can be distracting and disagreeable (personally I get car sick if I so much as see someone’s camera wobbling!), I feel that it doesn’t happen often enough to lengthen every day’s meeting by adding wording. Plus, if we add wording for this, it opens the door to add wording on a bunch of other behaviours that some of us may find disagreable (like, walking with a wobbling camera!).
This is not yesterday.
1) We are adults and can assess risk for ourselves
2) I always have the option to look away from the screen.
I do not agree with adding this wording to the opening remarks. Feels likr too much, another rule and not necessary.
I would not like to discourage people from sharing while driving with a hands-free set up during their commute. I also do not support adding more verbage to the opening regarding this. I feel that we are all adults and people make their own decisions around these matters.

I like the idea of the wording being added : ” ‘we strongly discourage sharing while driving a vehicle’ or something along those lines. ” I personally feel better if people do NOT have their camera on while driving & especially when sharing. Sharing can be emotional & difficult to share while driving. No camera on for sure- unless they are parked & want to share.
Hi! I have mixed feelings on this. I talk to fellow travelers regularly while driving with a hands free set up. I feel like this is a responsible use of technology. It is certainly a normative behavior for drivers to be on the phone while behind the wheel, for better or worse these days.
The morning meeting occurs within commuting time for many who may wish to share but also need to get someplace by a certain time by car.
I would not support this motion, although if it passed I appreciate that it says discourage rather than disallow.
thank you for this! i have very strong feelings about this! i understand people like to listen while driving but i get nervous when people have the camera on , drive and share. It upsets me. i cannot listen and i get co defendant. i am afraid for other drivers and pedestrians. it is not safe.
i hope we can resolve and request no driving, or listen only or park!
sorry for no capitalization,,,,
I generally support this motion, and glad to hear point 2 mentioned. The meeting extends a breakout room participants option of asking the breakout room chair to time them. This is a privilege and courtesy, not an entitlement or right. I’ve heard at least one participant push the envelope, asking the chairs to “provide a verbal, cause I don’t have access to visual.” The chair is not a personal concierge, and the tone was borderline rude and disharmonious to other members.
