The Recommended SMR Meeting Script
One Last Thought…
A few loose ends were tied up in a final script review on Sunday, Nov. 7th. Most of the changes were simply about improving the wording of parts of the script to better communicate the group’s sentiment. There was an improvement to the announcement concerning Service. We simplified instruction around the Friday Feelings check-in. And there was a change to the request for renaming dail-in participants (We may be able to automate that process).
A lot of discussion was brought to the topic of curtailing triggering language. The consensus was to avoid monitoring speech too closely, especially since the determination was likely subjective. It’s possible that the ideas behind the initial suggestion could be offered in the form of best practices, in the Safety Section on our website.
The 2021 Script – Members Survey
As a final step to the revision process, the membership on our email list were sent a simple survey. Announcements were also made at the morning meeting, conplete with a link in the chat. The survey asked 2 questions:
- Which title would you prefer – Comfort Rules, Comfort Guidelines or Comfort Agreements? [As it turned out, Rules and Guidelines tied with 30 votes each, Agreements came in third with 16 votes. This mirrored the opinions of the working group, leading to an unexpected outcome – Comfort Rules and Guidelines]
- Would you recommend that the new script be used at our morning meeting? [ The response was a lot more definative. 79 members answered this question – 70 saying “yes”; 9 saying “no”. This corresponds to 89% in favor, 11% against.]
Below is the script that accompanied the survey, incorporating the final set of the suggested changes from the last working group session. The introduction to the document describes the steps that were taken to achieve our goal – a review and revision of the daily script.
A Record of the Process – the Beginning
A working group formed to shepherd the revision process. Participation was open to all.
The script was been written out, line by line, incorporating the ideas and suggestions, which were generated during the online comment period, as well as from the recent Safety Survey. There were over 50 views of the Review of the Script page, which we estimate to represent 15 to 20 member participants.
Continuing the process, we had 3 separate, hour-long Script Review sessions, open to all, for discussing the suggested changes. We addressed the changes outlined in Script Review PORTIONS, below.
A fourth and fifth working group session was needed to address issues which were deferred and need more attention.
A great “Thank you” to all who joined in the discussions.
